Today saw the start of an amazing project in partnership with so many good people to begin to design and create a Victorian garden at Ryde Esplanade Station to present a better welcome to Island commuters and visitors alike. These brilliant volunteers, and later myself, shifted 20 tonnes of aggregate and 10 tonnes of soil onto the unused platform to create raised beds with sleepers from Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
This was no mean feat in itself with Pugsy from Island Line having to carry all the sleepers’ across fields, as they couldn’t be accessed by road!
This is just the first stage of what will be a 3 month project we, the Community Rail Partnership, in partnership with Ryde in Bloom, Ventnor Botanic Garden, Hover Travel, Ryde Town Council, the Foyer, South West Trains and ARC, will be working hard to deliver in time for summer visitors.
We also had additional volunteers without whom shovelling the soil aggregate and filling wheelbarrows wouldn’t have been so enjoyable…thank you Julian Winslow for showing additional skills other than that of being behind a camera, but thank you too for doing the PR shot!
